About Classic Art School
Classic Art School was founded on a simple belief: everyone has the capacity to create beautiful art given the right environment, guidance, and technique. Based in Sydney, we teach the time-honoured methods of classical art adapted for students of all ages.
Our Philosophy
Great art is built on great foundations. We don’t rush students through a curriculum — we give them time and space to truly understand each medium before moving to the next. Confidence comes from competence, and competence comes from patient, guided practice. Classes are kept to a maximum of 8 students.
The Curriculum
Our curriculum progresses through three classical mediums, with sketching woven throughout all levels, growing more sophisticated as students advance.
Level 1: Pastels — The Foundation
The entry point for all new students. Soft pastels are forgiving and ideal for learning fundamentals — colour mixing, composition, tonal values, and mark-making. Sketching begins with simple line work and gesture drawing.
Level 2: Watercolour — Building Mastery
Once a student has mastered the pastel foundation, we introduce watercolour — a medium that demands understanding of water, pigment, and paper. Students develop more complex sketching skills including perspective and proportion.
Level 3: Oil Painting — The Pinnacle
The pinnacle of our programme. Oil painting rewards patience, technical skill, and creative vision. Students apply their strong sketching foundations to detailed, layered oil compositions — continuing the tradition of the great classical painters.
